placeworks makes Apartment-Therapy tours!

Cool.  The project we did for our fabulous client Oscar just made Apartment Therapy!

Check it out and enjoy Lori Andrews’ great photos – including some new views and a bunch of ‘before shots’ that will leave you wondering.

Farewell to our Friend

Last week we lost our studio-mate and dear friend Wrigley after a short illness.

Out thoughts are with his family Richard, Regan and Jude and his dear four-legged friends left at placeworks – Jake, Sadie, and Kaos.  The rest of us here will miss his bigger than life presence and his companionship.

The studio just isn’t the same.

placeworks Project in Alberta Home Magazine

placeworks design’s Modern residential project on Sunset Road SW in Calgary is featured in the Fall issue of Alberta Home Magazine.

Find it on the racks out there or see it on page 26 of the electronic version at http://www.myvirtualpaper.com/doc/AlbertaHome/AltaHome_Fall09_CWM54496/2009090801/

We hope you enjoy the pictures and story as much as we have enjoyed this project.  Thanks again, Oscar!

Sleepy Hollow?

Judging from the comments of some respected observers of all-things-Calgary such as Zinc’s Brian Singh and MRC’s Nasheed Nenshi, commerce in Calgary appears to be heating up. Although the Gas sector is still hurting, there seems to reason for some smiles and optimism.

We’ve been quite fortunate at placeworks and have been pretty busy despite the less than wonderful environment of the last year. In fact, this week sees our office pretty quiet as everyone heads out for some deserved rest and relaxation.

I’ll be reading about some cool firms in the Pacific NorthWest and will have some good stuff to write about next week.

Take care.

Cantos and the National Centre for Music

While we were wrapped up at the incredible Calgary Folk Music Festival last week, Andrew Mosker and the great people at Cantos released the 5 concepts for the new National Music Centre at the Eddy to the public.
This competition serves as an exceptional example of how to identify and choose a design team for important public facilities. The five shortlisted teams were each given a significant stipend and enough time to create a preliminary conceptual design to ignite imaginations and assist Cantos in making their decision. So far, so good.
More information and amazing imagery of the proposals can be found at http://www.cantos.ca/
